Fix the leakage before filling the bucket

Habits are the crucial part of your life. In fact, it is said that human beings are creatures of habit.

In your life, there are some things that you have done so many times that now they have been a part of “you,” like drinking coffee or tea after waking up, using mobile phones while eating, and doing multitasking.

You literally become what you repeat.

Recently I saw a post that hit me hard. It said that “quitting your worst habit will change your life faster than building your best habit.” Fix the leak before you fill the bucket.”

You can change your life real quick if you just quit the wrong habits that are costing you more than building new habits. Here are some of the habits that might cost you more than the following:

  • Overthinking small things that don’t matter
  • Delaying taking important decisions
  • Procrastinating important work that needs to be done
  • Thinking more and doing less
  • Waiting for the right time
  • Wasting time to make things perfect instead of focusing on progress

No matter how many new habits you build, if there is a leakage in the bucket, then all the new water you put into the bucket will eventually leak.

On the other hand, if you fix the leakage, i.e., quit the wrong habits, then you are creating the right environment for building new habits, and now those new habits can do the actual work.

Ask yourself 2 questions.

  1. Which wrong habits do I need to quit that are costing me more than building new habits?
  2. Which habits do I need to build that will help me move towards my goal?

The best part is that you already know the answer; you just need to be honest with yourself and do what is necessary.
